The University provides sick leave benefits to regular full time employees as protection against loss of income and benefits in the event of a bona fide illness, injury, or pregnancy. With the approval of your supervisor, you may also use sick leave in the event of an illness of a family member. In addition, sick leave may also be used for medically related appointments. Supervisors have the responsibility of monitoring the use of sick leave. Therefore, supervisors have the right to request medical verification when deemed appropriate. However, employees absent for five (5) or more consecutive working days are required to provide medical verification for sick leave. Misuse of sick leave may result in disciplinary action as set forth in the Disciplinary Action policy.
Sick leave accrues as follows:
The more notice you can give your supervisor regarding anticipated absences, the less disruption to the efficient operation of your department. In instances where you are unable to anticipate your absence, contact your supervisor as early as possible on the first day of the absence.
Sick leave is not transferrable to other employees.
Unused accumulated sick leave is not compensable on termination of employment.
