ISHMAEL BEAH: A Long Way Gone: A Story of Redemption and Hope
The third annual Dr. Midori Yamanouchi Lecture Series at Misericordia University is presenting a touching and insightful lecture by a N.Y. Times bestselling author Ishmael Beah. As a former child soldier in Sierra Leone and left orphaned by the war, Ishmael was carrying an AK-47 by the age of 12. Pumped up by drugs and forced to kill or be killed, the odds were overwhelming for children in war to be swallowed up by the very war they are forced to wage. Ishmael Beah has not only emerged intact from this chaos, he has become one of its most eloquent chroniclers, seeing through horrors done to humanity with acute vision to find the places in the heart of tenderness, redemption and hope.
7:30 p.m. in Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall. Tickets for the event are free, but seating is limited. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Misericordia University Cultural Events Box Office at (570) 674-6719 or the remaining available tickets can be picked up at the lobby box office up to 10 minutes prior to the show. A meet-and-greet and book-signing session will follow immediately after the presentation.

Rekindle the flame in the hearth with stories, music, song and dance from the rich treasury of Ireland’s cultural heritage. Come spend an evening with Native Irish storyteller Tomáseen Foley and some of the most gifted Celtic musicians, dancers and singers performing today as they recreate the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a remote farmhouse in the parish of Teampall an Ghleanntáin in the west of Ireland – when the neighboring families gather around the fire to grace the wintry night with the haunting melodies of traditional Irish Christmas carols, to raise the rafters with the joy of their music and to knock sparks off the flagstone floor with traditional dances, and to fill the night with the laughter of their stories.
7:30pm, Lemmond Theater. $10 adults; $5 Alumni, Senior Citizens and Children 12 and under. N/C MU Students with ID.
