Misericordia University’s Master of Science degree programs recognize the special needs of the adult learner. Offering classes in both an evening and weekend format allows students to earn their degree in as little as two years. This, along with the small group class format, which enhances critical thinking, makes the graduate programs at Misericordia University a convenient and attractive way to successfully complete your educational and career goals.
The Graduate Teacher Education program is designed to enable teachers to remain in the classroom while assuming roles as leaders in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs. Recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for its innovative ideas, students can choose from five specializations.
Specializing in Supervision of Curriculum and Instruction gives teachers the knowledge and skills needed to participate in decisions about curriculum and instruction. Graduates can function as leaders in planning, implementing, evaluating and improving curriculum and instructions.
The Educational Technology specialization prepares students to implement advanced technology in their curriculum. The emphasis is placed on how to use modern technology to plan and deliver instruction. Graduates can become leaders of local school district instructional improvement teams, technology management teams, and will be able to improve instruction in their schools by helping their colleagues implement technology. The specialization meets all the PDE’s standards for Supervision of Instruction and Curriculum.
The specialization in Elementary Education allows veteran teachers to expand their teaching abilities and credentials. Currently certified teachers (i.e., secondary educators, special eduction educators, etc.) are not only prepared to teach in elementary classrooms but are trained to become skilled curriculum developers. This specialization meets all of PDE’s Specific Standards for elementary education.
Teachers can expand their knowledge base with the Educational Specialization in Educational Strategies. This specialization is unique in that it is specifically designed to provide students with a graduate degree that combines the perspectives of learning designed coursework based on educational needs and a focus on the K-12 educational spectrum of issues. The program provides a method of learning that allows for creativity and flexibility with its modified delivery model. This type of program encourages utilization of personal learning styles and responds to the educational needs of the community under the guidance of a faculty advisor and a variety of mentors. This program is especially appropriate for certified and practicing teachers and others interested in combining professional growth with best practices.
Our Special Education specialization is unique in that we offer four different pathways to get a Masters Degree and numerous ways to be Special Education certified. We offer a vehicle for those students who are Elementary certified, certified in another area and no prior certification to become certified in Special Education. For those teachers who are already certified in Special Education, we are offering advanced coursework for professional growth and development.
The Masters of Science in Teacher Education program culminates in a professional contribution, a project completed by the student and presented to their colleagues or professional group and which attempts to affect educational reform.
