Summer 2013 Schedule
 
 
Misericordia University's Teacher Education Department/Graduate Education Programs include a professional development opportunity for the educator interested in professional growth and Act 48 credits, but who is not necessarily seeking a master's degree. A student enrolled in these courses will receive three (3) graduate credits (not transferable toward a master's degree) and Act 48 credits. All courses are taught by well-qualified instructors who have expertise and experience in the areas they teach.
 
 
Tuition: $230 per credit; $690 per course
Dates: Dates as indicated
Times: All classes will be held from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, unless otherwise indicated.

EDU 585 Section DS:  Emotional First Aide: Helping Children Cope with Fears & Stress Part II
Instructor: Kristen Roppelt, School Psychologist, Wyoming Valley West School District

Wednesday - Online/embedded study

This is Part 2 of a course that explores children's experience with fears, stress, and other social and emotional issues that impact the learning process.  This course is designed to assist school personnel in recognizing children's social and emotional needs and increase awareness of various issues.  Topics discussed will include stress and anxiety, depression, peer relations, attachment issues, phobias and fears, school avoidance/refusal, death, divorce, traumatic events, critical incidents or disaster.  The course will explore various ways to support children in the school setting.

The second of a two part course, Classroom Teachers and the Special Education Process Part 2 is designed to reinforce procedures involved in the identification process, including pre-referral through placement of students with special needs.  This course will allow for extended discussion of the disability categories to help familiarize participants with various student needs.  Presentation on the collection of appropriate data and accurate completion of forms will also be reviewed.

This course will focus on legal issues affecting special education programs and stakeholders.  An overview of the legal system as it relates to education will be provided.  Federal special education laws, major special education court cases, and specific applications to administrators, teachers, and students will be examined.  Special emphasis will be placed on the regular education teachers responsibilities regarding identified students.

This course will guide teachers in enabling their students to find meaning from texts based on their own ideas, experiences, and background knowledge.  Nonfiction text requires the reader to approach the text in a different way.  This course will focus on strategies that are necessary for readers to use when reading nonfiction text.  Embedded instruction will include using these strategies in daily instruction and across the content areas.  It will also provide research-based instructional practices to teach necessary text structures to enhance comprehension.

This course examines some of the most common legal issues today's teachers face.  Topics to be included are IEPs, the special education process, safety issues, mandated reporter status, and teachers' rights and responsibilities.  The class focuses on examples and discussion of everyday practical matters.

This course will unpack and provide a better understanding of the common core.  Where did the common core standards come from?  How do the standards affect us as teachers?  How are they tied into teacher evaluation?  The course will also consider the shifts that are occurring in instructional practices.

Teachers all recognize the importance of teaching students the three R's (reading, writing, and 'rithmetic), but focusing on what students do with this knowledge is equally important.  How can we teach our students to think critically to survive in the "real" world?  This class will first explore what critical thinking is, and then consider various techniques teachers can use to foster critical thinking, and how they incorporate critical thinking into their lessons.

This workshop style course will allow teachers to reflect upon instructional practices and consider a framework for teaching and learning related to improved instruction.  Building from participants own instructional practices, teachers will consider, evaluate, and refine current practices and create new learning experiences for students.  Emphasis will be placed on Danielson's enhancements for effective practice and Fullan's work related to impacting student achievement.  Teachers will apply models to their own preprograms and course work will result in materials for use in their classrooms.
