Sister Mary Carmel McGarigle Archives

Welcome to the Sister Mary Carmel McGarigle Archives. Named for Misericordia University’s first archivist, the Archives was established in 1990, and is located on the third floor of the Mary Kintz Bevevino Library. Archives displays change throughout the year and may be viewed during regular library hours.

The Sister Mary Carmel McGarigle Archives actively collects, organizes, preserves and makes available information of enduring research value in all formats created by the administrators, alumni, benefactors, donors, faculty, staff, and students of Misericordia University. The Archives also collects and maintains records created by the College’s founders and continuing sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy. The archival holdings include a variety of formats including manuscripts, correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, scrapbooks, rare books, pamphlets, dissertations, publications, newspapers, maps, architectural drawings, memorabilia, audio/visual recordings, and other ephemera that support the Library’s mission to better serve the needs of the college community.

Archival collections are being entered in the Library online catalog. To search the online Library catalog for archival holdings, click here, and search by keyword (example: “Misericordia University Archives”). You may also search by archival “Record Group” numbers, which can be found under Manuscript Collections. Archival materials are available, under controlled conditions, to members of the College community and visiting researchers as set forth in the Archives Policies and Procedures. If you have questions or would like to visit the Archives contact the Archivist, Jessica Reeder. To request the use of archival material, please submit the Researcher Application.

The Sister Mary Carmel McGarigle Archives works in collaboration with the Back Mountain Historical Association and the Luzerne County Historical Society to preserve local history and to catalog photographs from the Back Mountain region.Images in the Back Mountain Historical Association Photo Database are the intellectual property of individual contributors and permission is required to reproduce these images.
