Citizens Bank Foundation provides scholarship support to Women with Children Program|
The Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program at Misericordia University was established in 2000 to provide support to women and their children by helping them realize their full potential through higher education. The program was designed to provide support, services, housing and financial aid for academically qualified single mothers of any age who are determined to complete their undergraduate degree. The program affords single mothers an opportunity to attend college while living on campus with their children.
The program has grown steadily from a pilot project to a successful educational model. Due to limited facilities and funding, enrollment is capped at 10 adults and 20 children, falling well short of the demand. A waiting list is maintained and eligible women are interviewed as openings become available. Funding is primarily derived through grants from private foundations, corporations and contributions from civic groups and individuals. Misericordia University features two homes on the lower campus that are dedicated to the program – the Pauly House and the Rasmussen House/Rosary Hall.
