Nursing student receives McLean Scholarship from AICUP
06-17-13

Kayla M. Zechman '14

The Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) awarded the prestigious McLean Scholarship for Physician Assistant and Nursing Majors to Kayla M. Zechman, a senior nursing student at Misericordia University.

Zechman is the daughter of Brian and Diane Zechman of Towanda, Pa. The $3,000 competitive scholarship award was made possible from an endowment established from the McLean Contributionship and will be used to support her senior academic year at Misericordia University.

Each of the 84 AICUP colleges is allowed to nominate one student that is majoring in either physician assistant studies or nursing. The state organization awards only eight McLean Scholarships.

A graduate of Athens Area High School, Zechman is scheduled to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in May 2014. During the summer, she is working as a nurse’s aide at Towanda Memorial Hospital and as a student nurse at Robert Packer Hospital, while also providing home health care for a private patient. At Misericordia, Zechman is the president of the Misericordia University Student Nurse Association of Pennsylvania for the 2013-14 academic year and is a PEER Advocate.

She also coordinated and organized efforts by members of the 2014 Nursing Class to raise money for a medical clinic in Ethiopia. Efforts by Misericordia University student nurses resulted in $1,500 being sent overseas to help pay for medicine and for nursing books so former patients can study to become nurses. The class will take up another drive to benefit the medical clinic in the fall.
