Simon is widely considered America’s best-known living playwrights and is the only author in recent times to have four plays running simultaneously on Broadway. “Rumors,” his 23rd play, is the story of four couples who arrive at the townhouse of a deputy New York City mayor and his wife to attend a party and soon discover that there are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the deputy mayor is slightly injured after shooting himself in the head. Comedy ensues when the upper-class group decides they need to do everything possible to conceal the evening's events from the local police and media.
