Spring 2013 Schedule
Misericordia University’s Teacher Education Department/Graduate Education Programs include a professional development opportunity for the educator interested in professional growth and Act 48 credits, but who is not necessarily seeking a master’s degree. A student enrolled in these courses will receive three (3) graduate credits (not transferable toward a master’s degree) and Act 48 credits. All courses are taught by well-qualified instructors who have expertise and experience in the areas they teach.
Tuition: $230 per credit, $690 per course

EDU 585 Section DY : ADHD and Other Health Impairments - Part 1

This course is designed to provide an understanding of the diagnosis and intervention of students with ADHD or other health impairments in the classroom. Both IDEA and 504 issues will be discussed. Practical interventions and strategies will be introduced to help improve a child’s success in their educational environment. This course will benefit regular education teachers, special education teachers, guidance counselors or anyone interacting with children in the educational setting.

This course will focus on the practical application of research-based models as they pertain to classroom management, instructional practice, curriculum design, data utilization and assessment. Opportunities for exploration of current trends (e.g. SAS and RtII) will be coupled with application exercises that will allow each teacher to enhance their own instructional practice. This workshop-style course will allow teachers to review, analyze and revise their own plans, materials, and resources for use in their current classrooms.

This course will discuss the nature of the public school system as it relates to the legal aspects, structure, and politics of taxation. In-depth analysis of the federal, state, and local roles in financing education will be discussed. Past, current, and possible future trends will be looked at as a major impacting factor on instruction.

Teachers all recognize the importance of teaching students the three R's (reading, writing, and 'rithmetic), but focusing on what students do with this knowledge is equally important. How can we teach our students to think critically to survive in the "real" world? This class will first explore what critical thinking is, and then consider various techniques teachers can use to foster critical thinking, and how they incorporate critical thinking into their lessons.

This course will focus on researched-based practices that work to improve student vocabulary, comprehension and academic achievement. Vocabulary is solidly linked to the recommendations of the National Reading Panel (2000) and occupies a very important position in learning how to read. Introducing robust vocabulary words through rich literature, explicit vocabulary instruction, oral instruction, personalization and active engagement will be addressed. This course will include many practical ideas for teachers to use in their classrooms. This course will be offered in blended format.

This course will focus on legal issue affecting special education programs and stakeholders. An overview of the legal system as it relates to education will be provided. Federal special education laws, major special education court cases, and specific applications to administrators, teachers, and students will be examined. Special emphasis will be placed on the regular education teachers responsibilities regarding identified students.

This is the second of a two-part course that explores Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Other Health Impairments as defined under IDEA and Pennsylvania State Guidelines (Chapter 14) for special education services. This course will discuss various strategies and accommodations that will benefit the student displaying characteristics consistent with ADHD or any Other Health Impairment in the regular or special education classroom. Understanding ADHD and OHI, Part II is designed for any school personnel seeking to expand their knowledge of how to provide intervention/strategies for students with these disabilities, including regular and special educators, guidance counselors, social workers, and speech, physical or occupational therapists.

This is an introductory level course designed for classroom teachers to provide hands-on, step-by-step instruction in basic classroom technologies. Students will explore technology tools that enhance and expand the classroom experience. Students will develop spreadsheets, collaborative documents and presentations using the Google Suite of Services. This is a web-based course; students must have access to a computer and reliable internet service.

This course is designed for regular and special educators, counselors and/or school social workers. The objective of this course to familiarize the participants with related research and current issues on the topic. The neuropsychological issues underlying reading and written language disorders will be addressed. The identification, characteristics and intervention for both reading and written language disorders will be presented throughout the course. Information obtained through this course is beneficial to the educator in working with both disabled and non-disabled peers.

This course will focus on scientifically-based strategies to teach vocabulary and using vocabulary assessment to guide instruction. Teachers will reflect on their own instructional practices and teaching techniques in teaching and assessing vocabulary. The course will also focus on providing active learning opportunities for optimal student engagement.

Every school across the nation strives to present a safe and secure environment. This course will enable the attendee to identify problems that threaten their school security, set objectives to alleviate the problems and help students write a plan for implementing a crises response/emergency operation handbook.

Bullying has received a lot of attention in recent years. While everyone can recall the kid who scared you into giving him your lunch money, bullying has changed and expanded today. We will explore the various forms of bullying, including the technologically-mediated
cyber bullying. Statistics and a variety of scenarios will be studied and discussed in detail. Participants will walk away with practical steps teachers can take to prevent bullying.
