01-14-13

Michael A. MacDowell
Misericordia University President Michael A. MacDowell has been named the recipient of the 2013 Francis J. Michelini Award for Outstanding Service to Higher Education by the Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP). President MacDowell will receive the Michelini Award at AICUP’s annual meeting and awards dinner in Harrisburg, Pa., on April 15.

The Michelini Award, which is given to individuals who have used their talent to strengthen independent higher education’s ability to serve students and communities, is named for Francis “Mike’’ Michelini who was the president of Wilkes College from 1970-1975. From 1975-1991, he served as president of the Commission of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, which is now AICUP.

“I am humbled that the AICUP Board of Directors would choose to present me with the Michelini Award,’’ said President MacDowell. “Mike Michelini’s years of service to higher education in general, and particularly to independent colleges and universities, are legendary. The fact that he accomplished so much at Wilkes and is well-known in northeastern Pennsylvania makes this award even more significant for me.’’

President MacDowell is Misericordia University’s 12th president. He has led the Religious Sisters of Mercy-sponsored institution of higher education since 1998. He will retire June 30, 2013 after serving 15 years and helping Luzerne County’s oldest college and newest university become regionally acclaimed and nationally recognized for providing the personal attention and challenging academics students need to succeed both personally and professionally.

During his tenure at Misericordia, he has also lent his considerable expertise to the Governor’s Commission on Postsecondary Education. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett charged commission members to study and report upon ways to make higher education more accessible and affordable to the students and taxpayers of the commonwealth. He also served on the AICUP Board of Directors from 2007-09 and was vice chair of it Economic Development Committee.
