Open house for high school students, parents set for April 27

Misericordia University is offering an open house program for high school students and their parents on Saturday, April 27 beginning at 9 a.m. The program offers prospective students an opportunity to spend an informative day touring the upper and lower campuses, meeting Misericordia students, faculty and coaches, and talking with admissions and financial aid counselors. Open house begins with registration at 9 a.m. in the Anderson Sports and Health Center located at the North Gate of the upper campus. A special “Meet the Coaches” session will be held from 9-10 a.m. The open house program will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The schedule includes refreshments, campus tours, a faculty session, lunch, and meetings with representatives of student services, athletics and financial aid. For those interested, a session will also be held on the university’s Alternative Learner’s Project for students with learning disabilities.

Misericordia University offers a liberal arts curriculum with 36 academic programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and clinical doctoral degrees. The 2012-13 freshman class of 511 is the largest in the school’s 87-year history and brings the total enrollment to more than 3,000 full- and part-time students.

New academic programs being offered to undergraduate students include the five-year combined Bachelor of Science in Medical Science and Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. The 3+2-year course of study is offered through the College of Arts and Sciences and is designed to prepare students for clinical practice as well as leadership in the medical community.

The Department of Business also is adding sport management as a fourth specialization to the Master of Business Administration program beginning with the fall semester in August. The Misericordia University Sport Management program will offer two tracts for students to complete a degree in the popular field of study. The traditional Bachelor of Science degree in sport management can be completed in four years. The combined Bachelor of Science/MBA degree is a five-year program in which students can earn their undergraduate and graduate degrees. The Misericordia University MBA Program is the only one in northeastern Pennsylvania to offer the 12-credit specialization in sport management.

All prospective students will have the opportunity to tour the campus’ newest residence hall, Michael and Tina MacDowell Hall, which opened in August 2012 and the 40,000-square-foot John J. Passan Hall, located at 100 Lake St., Dallas. Passan Hall houses state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms in the nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology programs of the College of Health Sciences.

The tours will also offer a look at the new athletic facilities, including Tambur Field, the new home to Cougar Baseball, and the university’s new John and Mary Metz Field House, adjacent to Manglesdorf Field. The University added football to its roster for the 2012 season and is just one of two schools in the Middle Atlantic Conference to offer all 23 varsity sports sponsored by the conference.

In the 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement, 94 percent of Misericordia freshmen gave the school a high grade compared to 88 percent at other schools surveyed, and overwhelmingly rated the faculty as available, helpful and sympathetic. Misericordia is also ranked in the top tier, Best Regional Universities - North category of the 2012 U.S. News and World Report America’s Best Colleges and is also ranked as a Best Northeast College by the Princeton Review.
